Sociology Computing

Welcome to Departmental Computing for the Department of Sociology at The Ohio State University. Our department has some of the finest computing resources availible to the discipline. At the center of it all is the Sociology Research Lab (SRL) which houses 17 state-of-the-art computing workstations, including several machines with dual-monitor configurations. The SRL provides access to various specialty software applications, digital scanning, lazer and color printing, and a host of technical reference materials. With four full-time professional computer specialists and many experienced graduate associates nearby, statistical and computer consultation is readily available when you need it most.

In addition to the Sociology Reearch Lab, we also maintain a separate research lab solely for graduate students which is in close proximity to their offices. This lab provides students with access to specialty software applications and lazer printing 24 hours a day.

For instruction, we also opperate a 30-station computing facility known as the Sociology Instructional Laboratory (SIL). This facility allows us to teach computer-based statistical analysis courses where hand-on computing experience is integrated with traditional lecture-based instruction for both undergraduate and graduate students. The instructional laboratory is available for students to work on assignments during non-classroom hours.

Our large network infrastructure includes our departmental web site, central email server, webmail, remote file access and plenty of personal and shared drives to securely store all of your data. We also offer short and long-term loan of computing hardware including personal laptops, multimedia projectors, voice recorders, transcription equipment and more.

Please follow the links to the right for more information on the plethora of resources we have to ensure your success as a member of this department. As always, if you don't see what you are looking for on these pages, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information.
