Computing Policies

The SRL is dedicated to furthering the work of the professional Sociologists in the Department. Computing policies are designed with the department's collective benefit in mind.

Policy Setting

  • The SRL inherits all Federal, State and Local laws, as well as any College and University policies.
  • SRL policies are established by the Computing and the Lab subcommittee.
  • Policies should always be consistent with the mission of the SRL. Policies which deviate from mission statements should be brought to the attention of the Department Chair.
  • SRL policies must be flexible, so that they can evolve to meet changing departmental needs.

Hours

  • SRL hours and schedule changes will be posted in conspicuous places around the Department.
  • SRL hours are established on a quarterly basis according to staffing levels. Normally, the SRL will open beginning at 8AM on the first day of each quarter. After the first day of each quarter, the SRL will be open every weekday through the day before grades for that quarter are due. On the day grades are due, the SRL will be open normal hours (typically 7pm). Normally, the SRL will close at 7PM (5 PM on Fridays), but during Summer Quarter closes at 5PM. During breaks between quarters, the SRL will be open 9am-5pm M-F. The SRL is closed University holidays.
  • SRL users must leave the SRL when it closes. Users are expected to finish up their jobs in a timely manner so that they are ready to leave at closing time.
  • After-hours admission to the SRL is permitted only to Labsters.
  • The SRL is open only during posted hours. During other, un-open hours (typically between quarters), the door may be unlocked and users should feel free to use SRL facilities. However, users should be aware that such access is a temporary extension of SRL service which is subject to abrupt termination.

Keys

  • SRL keys are issued to SRL professional staff and SRL student staff. Keys are returned at the end of employment.
  • Access to labs is regulated by the SRL professional staff. Contact Matthew Moffitt if you are having trouble accessing a restricted-access computing space.

Conservation of Resources

  • Printing is expensive. Minimize the number of rough drafts. Please do not use printers as de facto copiers: photo-copying is less expensive and our copiers are designed for a higher duty cycle. Our printers are inteded to be used for department/university business.
  • Tell your PC to shut down or 'stand by' when you're not using it, and keep peripherals such as printers and monitors powered off when not in use.

Supported Software

  • We try to direct SRL resources toward providing high-quality support for the most widely used software in each of several important types of use. The inverse relationship between breadth and depth requires that we maximize our efforts toward competently supporting a finite set of tools. It is simply too difficult to provide complete support to everyone for everything.
  • We will provide consulting and training on programs that are installed widely, and will do our best to make sure that applications run smoothly.
  • Please refer to the Department Policy on User-Installed Software and Hardware as a guideline for requesting a software or hardware installation.
  • Installation of unlicensed software violates University policy and state and federal law. We cannot guarantee that unsupported programs will work with our configuration, and we will not take these applications into consideration if we change that configuration.
