Comparative and international sociology, social stratification, education, race and ethnicity, and family dynamics. Prior research includes case studies of stratification and mobility in Africa, and cross-national and comparative studies of the impact of economic policies and institutional forces on educational outcomes and social well-being. Current research focuses on race, class, and gender inequalities in higher education in the United States; educational and labor market inequalities in South Africa; and the consequences of globalization and worldwide educational expansion for economic and social development.
